This is for all the hard working, pound the pavement, burn the midnight oil, climb the ladder, sooooooooooo busy folks of the world, of which I still am to a degree. So this is for me too.
Slow down, take a seat, grab a cup of tea and chill the f out. Rest, nap, sit in stillness, sleep all day, read a book, stay away from technology for longer than 10 minutes, REST!
Why is rest revolutionary?
Well it starts with taking a look at the current paradigm of life. The thought of letting go, tapping out, resting and allowing things, people, opportunities, creativity, abundance to show up in your life sounds super radical and a bit insane. We’re so conditioned to believe we have to work hard and give up any form of goodness that feeds our mind, body and soul. We learn that we’re machines and our worth is based on productivity, on money, on output. We’re fed the idea that force and pushing to achieve is the only way to receive. And that folks who flow and go with what feels good are inferior to the whole.
Toxic capitalism, colonialism, patriarchal values all feed into the philosophy and story that your value is based how much you produce. We wear a badge of honor the busier we are, we’re constantly told that hard work pays off and we see it all over the place as proof.
What we don’t see is the magic of rest, of napping, of time-out and chill and all the benefits that come along with this amazing, natural, timeless practice.
And that is why rest is revolutionary. Because it is radical. Because it is not mainstream. Because its not what is taught at home, in schools or the workplace.
It is time for rest, friends.
Rest is scientifically, spiritually, anecdotally proven time and time again.
Sleep is the best meditation. True, authentic, pure body, mind, soul rest is a very close second. And if you know me, you know meditation is my jam. Napping, stillness away from screens, reading a real book, sitting in a garden with tea, watching birds and bees fly and buzz, resting FOR REAL is revolutionary.
This is the revolution we are practicing in our home, in our family. There is nothing more invigorating and revitalizing than rest. In a IV session with Kristyn Childres, my inner voice said “Mamas rest is Micah’s best”. It sounded crazy to my mind, but my soul knows best, so I went with it. I called in the troops. The ever present and happy to step-in papa gave me space and time, Mariana the angel from heaven stepped up and of course matcha-making, morning walk, sink time Tia Em Strong delivered the gift of rest for mama. That’s why my soul called in a village. It was all it has ever known. One of my cousins on my hubby’s side said “Micah came to you on Thanksgiving day as an expression of gratitude from all the people you’ve helped along in the world.” What a gift!
And from that day on, I’ve been surrounded by people who present me with the gift of rest and finally at nearly 2 years of Bean’s incredible landing, I’m receiving. Taking it in, allowing myself to disconnect from the outside world and connect to myself and to source. I go within, not thinking about my business, my kiddo, my husband, my family or anything or anyone else. Sitting with a cup of chocolate, reading an uplifting book or just snuggling into bed while the world spins, without me in it. Pure heaven.
When I emerge, everything feels lighter, more possible, full of excitement and enthusiasm and play, play, play. And that folks, for me an often tired, always thinking, planning, consuming mama, is a revolution.
When we can be well- rested, body, mind and soul, we see the world through a different lens. We’re more present, more aware, more connected to ourselves.
We’re moving from human doings to human beings, the ultimate plot twist of humanity.
Join me in this revolution.
Sweet dreams, my friends. Dulces suenos, mis amigos.
